The Workshop

Over the course of two full days, from 9-5 on both Saturday and Sunday, we’ll dive deep into the essential elements of songwriting—Harmony, Melody, and Lyrics. In this intimate setting with a small group of around a dozen students, you’ll receive hands-on guidance, constructive feedback, and the support needed to bring your musical ideas to life.

By the end of the weekend, you’ll leave not only with a song of your own, but also with newfound confidence, connections, and a deeper understanding of the songwriting process.

Melody, harmony, and lyrics are the heart and soul of a great song—they work together to create something unforgettable.

The melody hooks you, harmony adds the emotional depth, and lyrics tell the story or share the feelings that connect with the listener.

During the weekend songwriting workshop, we’ll roll up our sleeves and dive into all three, showing you how to blend them into a song that’s uniquely yours.

This workshop will help you break through creative blocks, uncover new approaches to songwriting, and ignite your musical journey. It’s going to be a creative, fun, and hands-on experience, amidst a supportive and inspiring community of like-minded songwriters.

Let's take a look at the 3 key areas we will cover:

Harmony

Harmony (chord progressions) is key in songwriting as it shapes the emotional and musical feel of a song.

Understanding the various types of chord progressions and how they can influence the song you will write is an essential tool in a songwriter's arsenal.

We will cover everything from the basics, to the circle of fifths, to unusual chord progressions, and onto advanced progressions.

We'll explore:

Emotional Expression: How do harmonies set the emotional tone? Why are major chords uplifting and minor chords more somber and sad?

Structure and Movement: We'll cover how harmony drives the song, providing direction and supporting the melody and lyrics.

Contrast and Tension: Alternating stable and unstable chords creates dynamic tension and release, keeping the listener interested. We will look at some simple techniques to create variation when writing.

Identity and Style: Harmony defines a song’s style, whether simple or complex, and allows for creative exploration.

You will discover ways to easily change the style and genre of any song.

Melody

It's safe to say that the melodic line of a song is the song.

Not everyone will agree with this statement but when we break it down you will see this to be true.

Throughout the workshop we will dive deep into melodic structure and discover what makes a melodic line great, and also how we can write memorable and powerful melodies using a variety of techniques.

We will explore:

Identity and Catchiness: How does the melody make a song recognizable and memorable? You will discover what pulls the listener in and makes them hum your song in the shower!

Emotional Connection: We'll break down how melody evokes emotions, amplifying the song's mood—joy, sadness, excitement—through its rhythm and phrasing.

Lyrical Support: You will understand how melody enhances lyrics by highlighting key words and helping the song flow naturally, making it easier to connect with the message.

Communication of Ideas: Melody carries the emotional message, making abstract feelings more relatable and tangible. Operating in the aesthetic band, it's a wavelength that is beyond words, but it is what ultimately sticks with listeners.

Lyrics

Lyrics convey the message, story, or emotion behind a song, connecting with listeners on a personal level.

Here’s what we will cover in the workshop:

Emotional Connection: You will learn to write lyrics that express feelings and experiences that resonate deeply with the listener, evoking strong emotions like love, heartbreak, or joy.

Storytelling: You will learn the art of writing stories, whether fictional, autobiographical, or addressing social issues, to make the song more meaningful and engaging.

Theme and Message: We will cover how to communicate the song’s central theme or message, giving it purpose and influencing how the listener interprets it.

Memorability: What makes a lyrical idea "catchy" so that it sticks in people's minds? You will learn cool strategies some of the greatest songwriters have used!

Complementing Melody and Harmony: We will explore the relationship between lyrics, melody, and harmony and how all three together enhance the song’s emotional impact, making the words feel more powerful.

You will learn to craft meaningful lyrics, and create songs that leave a lasting impression.
